Collections, Conservation, and Material Memory: A Reception in Honor of Robert Bayard Severy

Tuesday, September 1, 2026

On September 1, 2026, join Revolutionary Spaces for Collections, Conservation, and Material Memory, an event honoring longtime supporter Robert Severy and his sustained commitment to the organization's conservation efforts. We will gather in the Old State House Council Chamber for a presentation highlighting recently completed and ongoing conservation projects from the Revolutionary Spaces collection, made possible by Severy’s generous support.

Featured works will include the Samuel Hodges wooden cradle and a portrait believed to depict Governor Thomas Pownall. Conservator Melissa Carr and Collections Manager Claire Burns will join us to discuss the cradle’s treatment and provide an update on the conservation of the portrait, including photographs of its restored frame and a video documenting the painting’s treatment, which is expected to be completed in November.

Revolutionary Spaces members and event guests will be welcomed with a reception prior to the formal program. Collections, Conservation, and Material Memory is free and open to the public thanks to the generous support of the Lowell Institute. Doors will open at 6:30 PM and the program will begin at 7:00 PM. Light snacks and refreshments will be provided.

Seating for this event is limited and priority access is available for Revolutionary Spaces members.
